Citroen is proudly

By the mid 1980's Citroen needed a car to take the mantle from the ageing Visa, and in line with the BX and CX, the smaller variant was inevitably named the AX.

Manufactured in 3 and 5-door formats and with a variety of engines, the AX quickly became a sales success for Citroen and spawned many special editions and a hot GT at the top of the tree.

This example is ... not a GT. But it is a 1.1TRE 5-door which does mean you get a higher level of interior trim than you might expect from a typically 80's french tin can. Showing just under 77k miles, it's averaged only 2,100 miles a year since new.

Outside, the off-white paintwork is in reasonable shape and will be getting some attention from our paint team before reaching its winner, and the acres of black plastic are also in very good shape. It's currently sporting silver steel wheels but will be sporting some original 13" plastic trims very soon. All in all, after 36 years on the road, it's survived remarkably well.

Inside is spotless; the seats, doorcards, roof lining, dash and carpets are all in exceptional condition. Nothing is electric; manual windows front and back and manual mirrors. You also don't get a rev counter, but you do get a lovely little clock instead.

The 1.1 is punchy and revvy, and thanks to its rebuilt carb, it's running like a dream too. Unlike many AXs, this is also a factory 5-speed manual, so you have a bit more top-end power for motorways, and it happily cruises along at 70, meaning it can play with modern traffic without being too much of a liability.

One thing this AX will do, is get attention wherever it goes. It's a great-looking little motor, and those ever-so-80s boxy lines and shape edges mean nothing else looks like it.

This is the sort of car that deserves to be cared for, and any retro French car enthusiast will undoubtedly fall in love with it.

Tickets will launch on August 22nd and the LIVE draw will be on Sunday 27th September 2026 at 8:30pm
