NO LONGER AVAILABLE 1996 Ford Explorer 4.0 V6

The mid 90’s was when the SUV craze started to gain momentum, families traded in people-carriers for higher, bigger and perceptibly at least, safer, SUVs.

But back then, SUVs still really felt as though they were variations on a ‘Jeep’ platform, more obviously designed to tackle genuine off-road tasks they’d never face in reality.

Fords attempt for the UK market was the Explorer introduced in January 1997, one of the smallest SUVs available in North America, switched to RHD for the UK and available with only one engine option, the 4.0 V6.

This particular example was registered in June 1997 on a ‘P’ plate, only 6 months after the Explorer first debuted in the UK and has the typical layout, 4.0 V6 5-speed Automatic.

Outside this Explorer is in excellent shape, finished in Desert Violet metallic over silver/grey metallic and recently upgraded to five-spoke alloy wheels with all four chrome centre caps present. It’s also been fitted with a towbar and has its factory roof bars and plenty of chrome.

Inside is also in outstanding shape, tweed-esque velour seats, factory CD/Radio, Air conditioning and, being a typical yank-tank, full electric windows, mirrors, front seats and sunroof. 

Showing only 77,000 miles this big old V6 hasn’t been very far at all and the 5-speed auto box is typically smooth and lazy. 

As retro-fords go, this is definitely a left field choice and feels completely out of place on UK roads in the best possible way. It’s much quicker than you’d expect but, just as thirsty as you’d expect. 

If you fancy something capable, unusual and guaranteed to get you noticed, a 4.0 V6, metallic purple Ford Explorer is a bloody good place to start!
