The repmobile market was hot in the 90’s with every manufacturer vying for a slice of the market dominated by Ford and Vauxhall.
Mazdas representative was, once again, the 626, a moniker dating from 1970 when Mazda first introduced it.
And in 1997 the 626 did what it always did, provided a reliable, cost effective mode of transport with very little to cause issue but, equally nothing to set your world aflame. Although arguably in the last 28 years, much of the 626s lack of character when new has been replaced by a quirky, cool charm as is typical with the more mundane Japanese saloons and hatchbacks.
This example is a GXI 2.0 petrol sporting 116bhp, a sub 10 second 0-60 sprint and a very decent amount of kit.
Outside, metallic green, of course, the go-to shade for any inconspicuous 90’s repmobile, with its original Mazda plastic trims and its chrome-effect GXI badging.
Inside, the 626 feels like a much more modern affair than you’d expect, velour has been replaced by mildly patterned fabric which is in excellent condition throughout. You get a few small screen and button combos for the air-con controls and clock, with a 90’s cassette replica Bluetooth MP3 player as its only upgrade. You also get full electric windows, mirrors and sunroof.
The dash has started to peel away where it meets the windscreen but, as it’s getting a new screen, we’ll be documenting the dash being restuck and fixed on our channel whilst the screen is out.
Showing just under 75,000 miles the 2.0 runs and pulls beautifully and the 5-speed manual is tight and snappy.
As a comfy, spacious, fairly powerful and unusual old 90’s motorway wile muncher, this 626 is a cool, left field choice with FOTU in its veins.
Tickets will launch on May 23rd and the LIVE draw will be on Sunday 28th June 2026 at 8:30pm
