Toyota's E100 Corolla, released in 1992, was renowned for it's Lexus like build quality and bulletproof reliability, so much so that Toyota realised quite quickly that they needed to make it worse, because none of them were going wrong.
So, in 1997, the updated E110 hit the showrooms, a curvy, bug-eyed Corolla fit for the late 90s, still boasting Toyota levels of reliability but dialling back slightly on the Lexus-like build quality that made the E100 such a tank of a car.
This example is a Corolla liftback fitted with the punchy and economical 1.6 and mated to a 4-speed automatic, for extra mundanity. Showing just over 90,000 miles, it's averaged 3,100 miles a year and has clearly been cherished by its previous owners.
Outside, this example is finished in a beautifully insipid lilac-silver metallic with black trim, its original Corolla plastic wheel trims and its simple '1.6' badging.
Inside is a symphony in beige and grey, accented with some typically 90's colourful patterns on the seats and doorcards. Everything is present, including the original 'Toyota' radio/cassette and floormats. Electric front windows and sunroof all work perfectly, as does the air con, but you are subjected to manual mirrors and keep-fit windows in the back.
Engine-wise, the 1.6 is no slouch, although it does feel as though at least 10 of its original horsepower are eaten alive by the automatic gearbox. It gets up to speed well enough, but you're not going to be winning any races anytime soon. Once up to speed, it's an easy and surprisingly modern-feeling car to drive, with good soundproofing, comfortable suspension and decent brakes.
As far as easy-to-own, dependable, reliable retro cars go, the E110 is a tough act to beat. Parts are easy to find and plentiful, engines are built to last, fuel economy is good, and if Lift-back format, there's more than enough room for the family and luggage.
