After the Mk4 Escorts UK success, the Mk5 was highly anticipated … and highly disappointing, shunned by the motoring press and criticised by customers for its archaic handling and wheezy engines!
By 1995 Ford had their work cut of for them, so whilst the Mk6 may look like a mere facelifted Mk5 from the outside, the truth is this car was the great car the Mk5 should anyways have been.
This example is a middle of the road 1.6 LX with some great kit and a good story too. Purchased new from Fords holy ground, Dagenham Ford, this car eventually found itself as a donor to restore another super low mileage but damaged Escort Ghia Estate. Once all the bits were taken, this car was put up for banger racing, but even missing a lot of parts and its whole front end, it was still too good for the track.
Now fully put back together this humble LX is a proper survivor, with just over 61,000 miles on the clock.
Outside, S497 RKE is much what you’d expect from a clean Escort, Pepper Red with 14” steels and original trims.
Inside she’s got some decent swag on her, sunroof, electric front windows, radio/cassette, electric boot release and ice cold aircon. Plus all the velour you’d ever want!
The engine is a peppy 1.6 16v Zetec affair mated to a five speed manual and runs like clockwork. The gearbox is tight and accurate and she handles … well, she handles like a 90’s Ford Escort.
All in all this old Escort is a proper saviour story and the perfect retro runaround for fans of the old blue oval or an easy starter classic!
Tickets will launch on September 25th and the LIVE draw will be on Sunday 1st November 2026 at 8:30pm
